While pure SF6 gas is non-toxic, its lack of oxygen means it cannot support life. Its high density, being five times that of air, implies that any leakage tends to accumulate in low-lying areas like cable trenches. Operators must be alerted to the risk of suffocation.
A blend of 20% oxygen and 80% SF6 can be safely breathed, and such mixtures have been employed in controlled laboratory experiments related to lung aerodynamics.
